Tara Skirt Kala Cotton — Natural Dye & Bloom Appliqué

Some things grow in unexpected places.

The Tara skirt begins with Kala cotton — an indigenous cotton handwoven in Kutch, grown in dry landscapes and requiring very little water. The fabric is then brought to life through natural dyeing, giving it a colour that feels honest and grounded.

And then comes Bloom.

Appliqué is an ancient technique — the art of placing and stitching pieces of fabric onto a surface to build pattern, texture, and form. What makes this piece different is where those fabric pieces come from.

Every appliqué element on this skirt is made from waste fabric — offcuts and remnants that would otherwise be discarded. Cut carefully, placed with intention, and stitched by hand, they come together to form something that feels like things growing across the surface of the cloth.

This is what Bloom means to us. Not a pattern, but an idea. That something beautiful can begin from what is left behind.

The Tara Skirt is part of our Bloom collection, where materials, craft traditions, and design come together slowly — much like the natural world that inspires them.

This fabric carries the rhythm of a family loom in Kutch through our Reyaan community.

It is woven by Manji Bhai, who has spent more than 30 years at the loom. In his home, weaving is part of everyday life - the steady movement of the shuttle and the quiet rhythm of the loom shaping fabric thread by thread.

For this textile, Kala cotton is used - an indigenous cotton grown in the dry landscapes of western India. Resilient and naturally adapted to the region, it has been part of local textile traditions for generations.

Once the yarn is set on the loom, the fabric begins to take form. As Manji Bhai works, the motifs slowly appear directly in the cloth - not printed or embroidered later, but woven into the textile itself.

A fabric shaped by landscape, craft, and the quiet patience of the hands that make it.
