Kantha: Old Sarees, New Stories
Ever wonder what happens to beautiful old sarees in India? In Sikra village and other small villages in West Bengal and bodering Bangladesh, they get a second life through the age-old Kantha technique.
Here's how it works: Hawkers collect vintage sarees from all over India. These sarees are then layered (at least 4-5 layers) to first make quilts. It's usually done by groups of women who sit together, chatting and stitching, turning these old fabrics into pieces of art. Their nimble fingers create patterns that tell stories - of tradition, of their village, of the fabric's past life.
Once they're done, our tailors step in, shaping these stitched-up saree quilts into wearable art. It's slow fashion at its best - and the best part? Every piece is unique, just like you.
When you wear our Kantha pieces, you're not just looking good. You're wearing someone's labor of love, supporting a village, and giving new life to old cloth. Pretty cool, right?

There wasn’t a jacket on the site that I liked. So I ordered the long surprise jacket. Meanwhile there were beautiful jackets posted on the website. Soni helped me choose one. I was torn between two, so she reserved both until I made up my mind. The short jacket I ended up choosing arrived a few days later. It’s very well made and the fabric is just beautiful. I love it. The price difference was immediately refunded too. Lovely.

I think this is a Kantha reversible collar vest sample. I love it so much. The colors are amazing and it is a great length. Wearing it for my husband’s birthday. Luckily it is in the 60’s today here in TN in the US.

My Zuri jacket finally arrived. It was ordered at the beginning of November and got caught up in the Canadian postal strike. It is so beautiful and well worth the wait. The colors, the sheen, the overall effect are so gorgeous. I hope Sindhu will be making more.

I am still not feeling well but I had my daughter take a quick photo of me in my short Kantha jacket on the way to her dance class. You might remember it as one returned in the US. I went out on a limb color-wise with this jacket but since it was close by to me here in the US, I decided to get it. And I love it. It is lighter weight than my other jackets which will be perfect for the warmer weather too. I was expecting two packages today but I had to leave to pick up my daughter and the postal service would not deliver without a signature. 🥲 Now I have to wait until Tuesday. So bummed. But all good things come to those with patience right?!

My first Kantha jacket! I love it! No makeup, forgot my earrings but it is finally cool enough in Tennessee to wear it. My 11 yr old daughter thinks it is kind of “weird…” maybe because it isn’t athletic wear like she always wears. My 13 yr old daughter thinks it is cool. And I loved explaining to my coworkers how it was created. 🥰

I am a big fan of all of the kantha products, but the sleeveless vests are by far the most versatile for me. I now own two of them. One for light colored outfits with white piping and one for darker colored outfits with black piping. And because they are reversible, I have 4 vests! They have lovely pockets on both sides which are good for small items like chapstick or a small wallet or keys. I find these so useful as I can put a wallet on the inside pocket to keep it safer and my chapstick in the outside pocket. They are not quite big enough for your phone to be secure, but I have other pockets on my clothes for that. The patterns are all so unique it is hard to choose. I am still on the lookout for my rainbow colored one and will keep looking at all the future drops. One suggestion for a possible future product …a tunic or long version of the sleeveless vests. I personally would love something like this.
